Associate Director Vacancy – Larson Group

LARSON GROUP IS EXPANDING

BE PART OF OUR HIGH EARNING TEAM

Established international consultancy seeks high achievers in interim, contract and permanent recruitment in response to recent growth.

Larson Group is a renowned multi sector search specialist looking for additional Associate Directors following recent relocation to spacious state of the art head office premises in Harrogate.

High achievers are typically under-rewarded for their efforts, earning between 35-45% of their billings and spending valuable resourcing time recording KPIs. Meanwhile, their hard work frequently serves to support lower achieving colleagues with vertical, geographical and client ownership adding to their frustrations.

If you’re a high achiever seeking greater reward for your talents, becoming an associate director at Larson is the next logical step.

Our associate directors earn 70% of their permanent fees and 50% of their contract book margin. They are supported with their own accountant and financial adviser and have the satisfaction of working in a stimulating team environment within a highly respected organisation. They also enjoy greater flexibility in their working hours for an improved balance between family, recreational pursuits and office life.

Larson Group is a leading supplier across multiple sectors including IT, Oil & Gas, Finance, Sales, Engineering, Equipment Rental, Social Care and Mining.

If you are a high achiever, love what you do, get a massive buzz from doing a deal, want to maximise the return on fee income and work in one of the best environments in the industry then contact Martin Pollard on 01423 526902 for a confidential discussion.

Senior Appointments at Larson Support Ongoing Expansion

Multi-sector search specialist Larson Group which recently relocated to a new state of the art HQ in the prestigious Windsor House Harrogate has made two new significant hires to its team.

James Johnson joins as Associate Director to head up the finance and banking team with focus on senior search and interim management. James has over 10 years’ experience in the sector and a loyal following of clients and candidates.

Julian Pawson, a senior search specialist and veteran in providing bespoke assignments predominantly within the manufacturing and engineering, will service a broad portfolio of clients in the PE / VC sector.

Larson has also recruited a new trainee, James Lee, to boost its Oil and Gas team.

Julian brings an added skillset and dimension to the business with his mentoring, drive and character.

CEO Pete Robinson commented: “We are delighted to have brought on board two dynamic and experienced specialist recruiters to support our growth strategy.

“We are also pleased to have appointed another trainee to join our structured development programme.

“Larson Group is going through a period of exceptional growth and further senior appointments will take place in the coming months to ensure our plan is met.

“Our move to a new HQ will ultimately cater for 45 search specialists and we have planned the office very much around our people blending their working life with the personal one together. Parts of the office are very contemporary and include a breakout area with a Playstation, wireless headphones, fatboys and a new kitchen.

“Whereas the sales floor has been designed with a minimalist professional look and feel, the open plan and functional environment provides the best place for our teams to share information and produce extraordinary results.

“We are very committed to further investment and expansion in Harrogate with the introduction of further brands to the group.”

Larson Group Expands – Be Part of the Success Story

Larson Group is experiencing growth and as a result is re-locating to a new 5000 sq ft Head Office in the centre of Harrogate.

Martin Pollard Managing Director and founder at Larson Group is looking to leverage and attract local talent into the recruitment sector.

Speaking passionately on the subject he points out that being a specialist recruiter in a rare skills sector is a highly professional job that brings both satisfaction and high financial rewards for those with the aptitude and enthusiasm to succeed.

Recruitment as a service is currently in high demand as companies are becoming more discerning and more knowledgeable about the importance of adding value to their teams rather than buying on price at front-end. Experienced recruiters can make a real difference to the outcome by using their experience and skills to deliver a professional and effective recruitment process.

Larson Group operates in multiple vertical sectors, all of which are experiencing massive demand in a climate where the right skills are in short supply.

We offer our clients a means of remaining at the cutting edge of the competition and the organisations we work with rely on us to provide the skills required as and when they need them, to ensure they remain focused and competitive.

Take the energy sector and in particular the oil industry. When a project is scheduled to take place its mission critical that they have the infrastructure in place to hit the delivery on time and within budget. We deliver the people skills required to complete the team and that often spans the complete hierarchy from support people right the way through to board level decision makers looking to deliver in their role and be successful.

Larson Group is looking to recruit game changers, people with a tenacious personality and a positive can do attitude, with a six figure earning requirement in order to meet your lifestyle and an aim in life to work hard, play hard. We will give you the platform, the training and the environment to excel in your chosen marketplace.

Pick up the phone and call me on 01423 526902 or email martin.pollard@larsongroup.co.uk detailing what you would bring to Larson.

Oil and Gas Jobs Boom Predicted

The UK’s oil and gas industry is looking forward to a bumper year as industry analysts predict strong growth and new jobs in the sector.

New investment in the sector along with the recommencement of shale gas exploration is expected to create up to 50,000 new jobs in 2013.

North Sea Oil alone can look forward to £40m investment over the next three years leading to rapid growth and high demand for some of the most critical oil and gas jobs, including senior management, strategic planning, geoscientists and exploration engineers.

The news follows the issuing of 167 new licences by the Department of Energy and Climate Change  (DECC) on 330 North Sea blocks at the end of 2012 during the 27th licensing round.

Investment isn’t restricted to the UK and other economies are putting more financial resources into oil exploration. The USA and Canada, Australia, Brazil and the Middle East are all pouring capital into the energy sector which will boost growth globally and lead to even higher demand for skilled employees.

“There are some significant new investments around the UK such as Total’s new Terminal project in Shetland and the planned development of the Harris and Barra oilfields,” said Pete Robinson of oil and gas recruiter Larson Group.

“Skills shortages have already caused difficulties for energy, oil and gas recruitment as the sector expands and those leading these new projects will have to act swiftly and strategically to ensure they have the right people in place to support this rapid period of growth.

“This may involve looking at other industries for candidates with transferable skills and with global salaries running high they may need to be prepared to negotiate to secure the right staff.”

Energy Recruitment – Why Energy Firms Needs to Recruit for Success

Recent figures have revealed that nine out of ten senior managers in the utility sector say their company is investing in leadership programmes in an effort to develop senior staff who can take their business forward.

However, less than half believed they were managing to retain key personnel with valuable skills and knowledge.

We have mentioned energy recruitment and the skills shortages being faced by oil, gas and other utility companies previously in our blog and this latest information points to another important issue facing the sector. Not only can it be difficult for energy firms to find the right people for the top jobs, it can also be a challenge for them to hang onto future leaders.

What is reassuring is that most people working within the energy industry believe that sound recruitment practices and employee development strategies are helping to plug the gaps that currently exist at senior executive level. Most organisations now recognise the need to have a well defined succession plan in place and many are already making good progress towards recruiting the right individuals to fill crucial roles within that plan.

If the future demands of the businesses operating within this fast growing sector are to be met then attention must be given to recruiting the right individuals for those fundamental senior management positions and continuing to invest in leadership development.

IT Jobs Figures Buck the Trend

The number of job opportunities in the IT sector is growing at a faster rate than in any other industry in the UK according to the latest figures.

Although the number of public sector vacancies has fallen, growth in the private sector has more than made up for the drop and the outlook for 2013 is extremely positive.

Growth in the number of IT jobs in the UK was faster than in any other area of the economy last year and experts are predicting that technology will pave the way for recovery in 2013 and beyond.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics released in December showed that average pay for IT and telecoms directors rose by 8% last year, a fact that recognises the specialist nature of the sector and the growing need for knowledge and experience.

Technology has a significant role to play in every organisation these days, whatever its size or purpose, and the need to employ people within a company with the specialist skills to ensure the infrastructure is performing its role effectively has never been greater.

Those with the technical knowledge as well as the ability to take a strategic approach to IT and align its use with the objectives of the business are likely to be in particularly high demand.

Positive Outlook for Recruitment Sector in 2013

As the latest employment figures continue to point to a resilient UK labour market, there is plenty of optimism in the recruitment sector as we head into 2013.

The rate of unemployment in 2012 was 0.7% lower than had been expected, at around 8%, and as we see promising signs of economic growth this looks set to be a year when hiring will be back on the agenda for many firms.

Some of the areas that are currently bucking the trend and producing exciting new employment opportunities include oil and gas, engineering and IT. There are many factors involved here but government initiatives to support entrepreneurship and innovation have gone a long way to boost these areas of the UK economy.

The jobs market is likely to benefit further from government plans to invest £5bn in road, rail and other infrastructure. The impact may not be felt immediately but the fact that it is on the agenda is bound to improve confidence.

As far as our own business is concerned, we are starting 2013 on an extremely positive note. We have a fantastic team in place and will be expanding further in the months ahead. Our finance, IT and energy divisions continue to thrive and we have seen strong growth in our other areas of specialism including marketing, FMCG, medical devices and health.

We are looking forward to a year of opportunity and growth, both for Larson Group and for the UK economy as a whole.

Oil and Gas Industry Looks to Recruit More Women

The oil and gas industry is reviewing its image in an effort to attract more women to work in the sector.

The news comes as accountants PwC revealed that 120,000 new recruits were needed in Aberdeen to meet demand associated with the growth in the energy sector and allied industries.

As well as adapting advertising and recruitment policies in an attempt to appeal to female applicants, initiatives are underway to tempt more women to take up careers in engineering.

Aberdeenshire West MSP Dennis Robertson said recently that schools in his constituency were also now teaching energy production and he hoped this would be extended throughout Scotland.

He said the current skills shortage in the energy sector meant the private sector was keener than ever to encourage women to apply for roles.

Larson In the News – Feature on Larson Group MD

Martin Pollard, Managing Director of Larson Group

Larson Group’s MD Martin Pollard recently featured in the business pages of the Harrogate Advertiser, Ripon Gazette, Knaresborough Post, Wetherby News and Nidderdale Herald. Read the interview here:

Name: Martin Pollard

Job title: Managing Director

Company: The Larson Group

In a nutshell, what does your company do?

We are a senior executive and interim recruitment firm with specialist teams working in the oil and gas, finance, IT, marketing, medical and manufacturing sectors.

How did the company begin?

I have been working in the engineering and energy recruitment market for more than 20 years and joined forces with our CEO Pete Robinson to launch Larson. Pete has more than 15 years’ experience in IT recruitment and was founder and MD of 4IT, which he sold to its management in 2008. He was also part of the board that sold Conos to Diagonal Plc in 1997. Between us we have a huge amount of expertise across a range of industries and we wanted to create a new business that set itself apart from others in the market in the way it ran its team and its portfolio of clients.

What attracts customers/clients to your company?

We work hard to promote excellence within the recruitment industry and have a series of quality assurance procedures in place and thorough processes for recording each step of the recruitment journey. This emphasis on integrity has enabled us to build an excellent reputation with clients and with the industries we work with as a whole, particularly oil and gas, health and finance where we are well known as a leading senior executive and interim recruiter. As a result, 90% of our business comes from existing clients and referrals. We know the industries we work with in depth and we understand their needs which means we can source the right people for their strategic business needs. That doesn’t always mean recruiting from within their industry. It’s often the case that the relevant skills required by the oil and gas industry, for example, could have been built up in an engineering role in a completely different sector. The recruitment process always begins with a thorough assessment of the client’s requirements and close questioning by our recruiters to understand the wider needs of the business. Our recruiters are trained to ask where the candidate will fit into the business, how the appointment will affect the structure of the organisation and whether the role is part of a wider business plan.

Tell us about your role.

Pete and I are both hands on members of the team and are deeply involved in client work ourselves as well as the day to day running of the company and management of staff. In recruiting our own team we have looked for dynamic individuals, most of whom don’t need micro managing but who appreciate strong leadership to provide them with the tools and focus they need to do their job well. Most of our staff are seasoned recruiters and are experienced in their roles. For them, our training focus is on recruiting the Larson way. We team up long serving staff and newcomers to work together to ensure the Larson ethos is instilled from the start and carry out regular appraisals with all staff to promote good internal communication.

What makes you good at what you do?

I am a very good judge of character and can quickly evaluate not only who will be right for a particular client role but also who will be good for our own business. The other key quality for any recruiter is an ability to negotiate, particularly as an appointment reaches its critical latter stages. This is where two decades of experience and knowledge of the demands of the sectors I specialise in comes into its own.

What are the future goals for your company?

We have grown rapidly since we launched and now have a team of 20 people based in our offices in Harrogate. Our plans for the future are ambitious and we hope to move to larger premises within the next 12 months and concentrate on growing our team in Yorkshire between now and 2015 before setting up additional offices in other parts of the country where there is a particular need for senior executive and interim recruitment in our areas of specialism.

What is the most difficult challenge your company has faced? And what challenges are you experiencing at the moment?

It may seem strange for a recruitment firm to say this but finding the right people for our own team to support our rapid growth has been one of our biggest challenges. As an innovative and fast growing business we wanted to attract entrepreneurial individuals to join our team but understood that many of the highest achievers would rather set up their own businesses than work for a recruitment agency. We therefore launched our associate model which offers one of the highest percentage commission rates currently available in the recruitment market. Associates receive 70 per cent of the fees they bill and benefit from Larson’s existing network of contacts and strong reputation in the recruitment industry. The scheme has helped us attract people with the right level of experience to help us establish contacts in new markets and cement our reputation in the ones we have been traditionally strong in. Candidates applying for jobs with Larson can opt to be employed on our usual terms or work for us as an associate. We now have a strong group of people working for us and we have a number of others set to join us over the coming months. We have also recently launched a trainee scheme for those who would like to embark on a career in recruitment. It’s something we piloted a year ago and thanks to the success of that trial scheme we are now rolling it out more widely across the business.

What is the biggest lesson you have learnt in business?

The importance of flexibility. That applies to working with clients and managing staff. We were finalists in 2012’s Ackrill Media Group Employer of the Year award and one of the things that made us stand out was our flexibility as an employer. We believe this makes it easier for people to balance home and work life and by putting people in control of their own working hours they are generally happier and more productive. Some prefer to come into the office every day whereas other like to spend some of the week working from home. However, flexibility only works if there are plenty of opportunities for the team to do things together. We have regular social events and fundraisers and nine of us recently tackled the 72 mile Great Yorkshire Bike Ride for charity.

What moments of your career so far stand out?

Launching Larson has definitely been the highlight. It was extremely hard work in the early days but Pete and I have built it up to become a significant sized business that already has a strong reputation as a recruiter in the main sectors we work in. Originally it was our own expertise and contacts that helped us succeed but now Larson is well known in its own right and that is a huge benefit to our recruiters when they are approaching both clients and candidates.

Why is it good to do business in the district?

Harrogate is a beautiful place to live and work and strategically it is well placed for doing business up and down the UK. Much of our work in the oil and gas industry is in Scotland and the main financial institutions are based in London so we can travel in either direction fairly easily. The quality of the local job market and our proximity to Leeds, York and Manchester has helped us recruit the people we need to grow our business successfully.

Oil and Gas Industry is UK’s Best Kept Employment Secret

As demand for high quality candidates to fill senior roles within the oil and gas industry continues to grow there are still many who underestimate the importance of Britain’s energy industry to the economy.

Many believe the UK sources most of its oil and gas from abroad whereas in fact the opposite is true, with three-quarters of our energy needs being home produced.

Awareness may be higher in regions where energy production contributes to the regional economy, for example in North East Scotland, but the energy industry faces significant PR challenges if it is to attract new talent.

A greater understanding of how the UK’s energy is produced and used will help to generate interest in the wide variety of professions within the sector. In addition, a broader knowledge of the energy industry’s contribution to the UK, European and global economies will contribute to positive growth and new investment in the years ahead.
